Navigate the UK Student Visa Process With Confidence

Understanding The UK Student Visa Process

The UK Student Visa, officially called the Student Route and formerly known as the Tier 4 (General) Student Visa, is required for international students who want to study full-time at a licensed UK institution. It allows students to live, study and work part-time in the UK for the length of their course.
From 8 April 2026, the UK Home Office raised the Student visa application fee to £558 (Rs. 71,908.18), up from £524 and the Immigration Health Surcharge continues to apply on top of that at £776 per year of study. Even with these increases, the UK issued 95,231 sponsored study visas to Indian nationals in the year ending December 2025, making Indians the largest single nationality group among UK international students that year.
Understanding the visa process in detail matters because approval depends on more than a university offer. It depends on financial evidence, a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) and a Home Office assessment of whether you are a genuine student.

Types of UK Student Visas

Student Route (Student Visa)

This is the main visa used by international students enrolled in full-time courses such as bachelor's, master's, PhD and eligible further education programs. Applicants must be 16 or older and hold an unconditional offer with a CAS from a licensed sponsor.

Child Student Visa

This route is for students aged 4 to 17 who want to attend an independent fee-paying school in the UK. It carries different financial and welfare requirements from the main Student Route and does not include the same work rights.

Graduate Route

This is a post-study work visa that lets eligible graduates stay in the UK after finishing their degree. It is not a student visa but connects directly to the study pathway and it currently runs for 2 years after a bachelor's or master's degree and 3 years after a PhD.

Where And How To Apply

Every part of the UK student visa process now runs through the official gov.uk website; there is no walk-in embassy interview for most applicants the way there once was.

FAQs

What is a CAS and why do I need one before applying for a UK student visa?
A CAS, or Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, is a unique digital reference issued by your university after you meet the required conditions. It carries 50 of the 70 points required under the Student Route and is a key part of the UK student visa process.
What does the Genuine Student assessment actually check?
The assessment considers whether your course choice, academic background, career plans and financial circumstances are consistent. Your SOP, CAS and financial documents should all support the same clear and credible explanation throughout your application.
What is ATAS and do all postgraduate students need it?
ATAS clearance applies only to certain postgraduate courses involving sensitive science, engineering or technology subjects. If applicable, obtaining ATAS clearance is an important step to complete before moving ahead with the UK student visa process.
What happens if my UK student visa application is refused?
The refusal notice will explain the specific reason, which may relate to financial evidence, the Genuine Student requirement or another eligibility issue. Reviewing the refusal carefully can help determine the right next step in the UK student visa process.
How soon after graduating do I need to apply for the Graduate Route?
You must apply for the Graduate Route from inside the UK before your Student visa expires; it cannot be applied for from outside the country. Since it comes at the very end of the UK student visa process, most students start preparing this application in their final term rather than waiting until after results are out.
