The rules that catch students out:
The limit is weekly
It is a maximum for each week, not an average over the month. Two jobs of 15 hours each in a term add up to 30 hours and break the rule (WRC).
No self-employment
Stamp 2 holders must not run a business or trade (ISD). Freelance platforms and contractor gigs do not fit. Remote work is fine only if you are an employee on an Irish payroll.
Documents come first
Employers can check your IRP card for Stamp 2 (NCI). You also need a PPSN before you start.
Study comes first. You must show progress in your course each year. Students can stay on student permission for a maximum of 7 years. English language students need at least 85 per cent attendance (ISD).

Funds cannot rely on work
Students must show access to €10,000 for courses longer than eight months (UCD). Immigration guidance says those funds must be available without employment income (Total Law).

Set up your tax in three steps
Get a PPS number
Create a MyGovID account, apply at MyWelfare and attend the in-person appointment at an Intreo Centre. Bring your passport, proof of a long-term address and a letter from your college. Short-term accommodation is not accepted as an address (NCI).
Register your job
In Revenue myAccount, choose Add Job or Pension Details and enter your PPSN, your employer’s tax registration number and your start date.
Give your employer your PPS number on day one
They request a Revenue Payroll Notification. Until it arrives, you are on emergency tax. Any overpaid tax and USC come back on a later payday.
Worked example: Say you worked the maximum 20 hours every week for 52 weeks at €14.15. That is €14,716 gross, which is the upper limit for term-time earnings.
- Income tax: 20% of €14,716 is €2,943. Your €4,000 in credits cancels it, so you pay €0.
- USC: your income is above €13,000, so USC applies. That is €60 on the first €12,012 plus €54 on the remaining €2,704, or about €114.
- PRSI: your weekly pay of €283 is under €352, so you pay €0.
- Take-home: about €14,602.
Holiday weeks change the picture. A 40-hour week pays €566, which is above the PRSI threshold, so 4.2% (€23.77) comes off that week. From 1 October, the rate becomes 4.35% (€24.62). Your payslips will show the real figures. If your employer over-deducted, claim the refund through myAccount.

- Log your hours. Keep a weekly note of every shift across all jobs so you never pass 20 hours in term.
- Cap your hours in exam weeks. Working fewer than the limit is always allowed.
- Ask for rosters two weeks ahead. Share your timetable and exam dates at the interview.
- Protect attendance. Your permission depends on yearly progress, so a missed lecture for a shift costs more than the pay.
- Keep a cash buffer. Do not build your budget around a job you might lose. Keep at least one month of rent in savings.
- Check every payslip. Look at your hourly rate, hours and tax. Raise errors early.
